Harman call over prostitute website

Dear Friends:

Political leaders in the UK are calling on the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to put an end to a website where people "rate" prostitutes. The site in question is called PunterNet. Punter is a slang term in the UK for male sex buyers.

This is an interesting development. There are more websites than I can count for men who are seeking to purchase sex. Such sites give all kinds of advice to men on the "best places" to go, how to avoid police, and provide commentary on their sexual experiences. This is the first time that I've heard of a government's leaders speaking out about one of them.

So, on one hand it's refreshing to see a government take note of such a website and publically condemn it. On the other hand, I can't see why a website featuring women from the UK is anymore debased, degrading, and dehumanizing than a site featuring women from other countries. My point is that if such sites fuel the demand for prostitution, which they do, then ALL such sites deserve public condemnation, not just the ones that feature women from one's own country.

Abolition!

Labour Deputy Leader Harriet Harman has urged movie star-turned-politician ArnoldSchwarzenneger to "terminate" a website which allows people to rate prostitutes. She told the Labour Party Conference that PunterNet was based in California, where Schwarzenegger is governor, but contained "pages and pages of women for sale in London".

The "sinister" website "fuels the demand for prostitutes" and puts women at risk, she told activists in Brighton.

Ms Harman said: "There is now a website ... where pimps put women on sale for sex and then men who've had sex with them put their comments on line.

"It is PunterNet and fuels the demand for prostitutes. It is the ultimate commodification of women and puts women at risk. It is truly degrading."

It was "a sinister development which we are determined to stop".

Ms Harman continued: "PunterNet has pages and pages of women for sale in London. But PunterNet is based in Californiaso I've raised it with the US Ambassador to London and I've called on California's governor Arnie Schwarzenegger to close it down.

"Surely it can't be too difficult for The Terminator to terminate PunterNet and that's what I'm demanding he does. And if he doesn't, I've got a message for Arnie: I'll be back."

Ms Harman said the Government was stepping up action to tackle human trafficking in the run up to London's 2012 Olympics.

"We're determined to ensure that, especially in the run-up to the Olympics, international criminal gangs don't trick and abduct women from abroad and sell them for sex."
